Birdwatching in Misiones: a beginner's guide
To start birdwatching in Misiones you only need binoculars, an early start and a slow walk along a forest trail. The province has more than 550 recorded species, and a single place such as Refugio Tingazú has already logged 174.
What to bring
- Binoculars (included on the refuge's guided outings).
- Muted clothing and closed shoes.
- Water, insect repellent and something to note what you see.
- A bird app or field guide to identify species (for example eBird or Merlin).
When to go out
Early morning and dusk are the most active times. Around midday many birds stay still in the shade.
How to look
- Walk slowly and pause often: many birds show up once everything is quiet.
- Listen first: the song tells you where to look.
- Find the bird with your eyes first, then raise the binoculars.
Where to go
The refuge has its own trails you can walk on your own, plus a guided walk with an introduction to birdwatching. To add species from other habitats, outings can be arranged to Urugua-í Provincial Park (about 2 h away) and birding safaris by vehicle.
Stay in the forest
