Aves: el corazón de la experienciaBirds: the heart of the experience

The trails cross secondary forest, yerba mate fields and traditional plantations, while a spring and a pond with floating plants add further habitats for wildlife.

«La selva no es el paisaje. Es el corazón que organiza la vida.»“The forest is not the scenery. It is the heart that organises life.”

Refugio Tingazú is a private wildlife reserve in the countryside of El Alcázar. It sits in an agroforestry mosaic with remnants of the Paraná (Atlantic) Forest, among traditional plantations, patches of secondary forest and land in regeneration. It is a place to observe, learn and live alongside nature, with birds at the centre.

The refuge is named after the tingazú, or squirrel cuckoo (Piaya cayana), a long-tailed rufous cuckoo that bounds through the treetops like a squirrel or a cat, which is why it is also called “cat's soul”. The word “refuge” describes its role: a place where wildlife finds shelter, food and continuity in a landscape changed by clearing and plantations.

No solo avesNot only birds

Other animals have been recorded here too, including a family of margays that stayed in the area for a while.

Restauración del monteRestoring the forest

Restoring a forest is not just about planting trees. At Refugio Tingazú we support the recovery of a capuera: land where nature has already started to regenerate on its own.

Con la Regeneración Natural Asistida intervenimos de a poco:With Assisted Natural Regeneration we step in gradually:

We free young saplings and protect nurse plants such as fumo bravo and chilca.
We dig small trenches so rainwater soaks into the soil.
We plant native species where needed, many from a “wild nursery” growing under a eucalyptus stand.
A new trail lets you walk through the area and see the landscape change.

Estamos aprendiendo a ayudarlo a volver.»“We are not making a forest. We are learning to help it come back.”

By carrying seeds, birds play a key role in the forest's recovery. The project is advised by Marcelo, of Yvyrareta Arquitectural.

Small gestures are weaving a web of people around nature.

Of Armenian origin, born in Switzerland, he arrived in Misiones in 1923 with his family. And on meeting the Misiones forest —alive, untamed— he fell in love with it. In its shadows, in its sounds, he recognised something essential: a deep connection with nature, with his own origins. Tigrán Toumanián —known to everyone as Dic— had a gift for connecting with the unseen: the whisper of the trees, the gaze of people, and the ancient song of the birds, like a sacred language. Dic did not come to impose himself on the forest. He came to learn from it. It was he who found the giant timbó, a tree sacred to the Guaraní people, a symbol of life, memory and protection. That timbó —later declared a provincial monument— became the keeper of many stories. Don Toumanián visited it the way one visits a wise elder. It was not just a tree. It was a living bond between worlds. He was a pioneer too. Not with speeches, but with simple deeds. He opened trails, walked alongside others, built bridges and shared what he knew generously. Tigrán passed away, and soon after, the timbó fell. Some say it was a storm. Others… that it simply left with him. But something remained: the seed of respect, of a deep bond with nature, with the peoples who honour it, with the animals, with the trees, with the land he chose as his own. The land he dreamed of seeing flourish for his children, for his grandchildren, and for his beloved Red Earth.

Birds first took me to the Perutí Paranay community. I wanted to see their trail and we walked it with binoculars. From that meeting grew the wish to get to know and listen to each other and build a relationship of respect, in which the community shares whatever it wishes of its culture and its bond with the land.

The first meetings were with Bernardino; today Catalina is a key voice in the dialogue. Those conversations led to the idea of supporting a community tourism project defined and led by its own members, respecting their decisions, their pace and their knowledge. One possibility is training community members as birding guides. Any stories they choose to share will always be told in their own voices.

In the Misiones forest we are growing something small: a place where people can come close to nature again. Walks among old trees, birds at dawn, fires at dusk and shared meals. Artists, naturalists, families and travellers are starting to gather around something in common: the wish to care for the forest and learn again how to live close to it.

Perhaps that is what is being born here: a small human ecosystem around the forest.
